On conventional rolls steam condenses in the chamber, and water thus deposited at the bottom cannot be removed via the siphon tube. This results in changes in temperature over the surface of the roll.
This temperature change can warp the roll in what is known as the banana effect, resulting in the production of poor quality of board. This problem may even cause the teeth at the ends of the rolls to break.
DDS is a condensate extraction system without a siphon tube that removes all water from the steam chamber.
